Can anyone offer advice on house training puppies?

Question by Panda<33: Can anyone offer advice on house training puppies?
I have a 8 month old heeler and she was inside for a while but i got too stressed trying to house break her. I didn’t want to take her back so she now is outside. And I feel really bad about doing so. I want to bring her back inside and train her right. But, I’m planning on getting a 2 month old hound. But, I’m dedicated to training them both. So anyone with advise on house training, helping them get use to each other, and other things i may need to know about young puppies. Please help!

Take your puppy outside on a a leash every hour or so to go potty. Bring treats. If she goes, praise her.
If you catch her going potty in the house, scold her and put her outside.

Answer by fashionlvr101
let her out lots! and during the night if you cant let her out then put down “puppy pads” they will absorb alot of pee so that should help at night

I just got a rescued 1-year old beagle/terrier mix two weeks ago and I understand what you mean about the house training pain… However, I have to say that with consistency and patience they learn very very fast. My dog was fully up to task in about 3 days (he may have been housebroken by his old owner, but he needed a crash refresher course).

Try to keep a very consistent schedule with her. Feed her at the same time every morning and evening. Take her out at the same time every morning first thing when you wake up, then after she eats breakfast, at noon, at around 5 pm, and then right before bed time. When she’s not being closely supervised, keep her on a crate just big enough for her to stand up and turn around. Every single time you see her go potty outside, praise her profusely and give her something special (like cheese or a small piece of a hot dog).

If her bad habits are not too ingrained already, she’ll catch on in about a week or two. Just remember, be patient and consistent. Read a couple of articles about it from websites like the Humane Society or the ASPCA. Be patient, be consistent, be persistent.

As for introducing another pet, I’d wait until the one you have now if fully housebroken and at least up to the task in basic obedience training.

Good luck and enjoy your dog!

well, as sson as he/she enters the home, start taking/letting her outside every 2 hours. When you cannot watch them or leave home, put them in a crate. when you take them out, praise them immediately after they defecate/urinate. you can use treats as an extra incentive but sound very excited when talking to them and pet them and walk right back inside the home with him/her once she has went. when he/she has an accident in the home, show him the accident(if you didnt catch them during the act) and scold them and lightly,LIGHTLY slap their backside. always use the same words but different tones when praising and scolding so they can associate the good/bad acts with the sounds/words. let them outside within 30 minutes of drinking or eating to prevent accidents. Answer by lil mk
ok first of don’t get the hound in till you have house broken you heeler. It will only get worse with two untrained dogs. You will only be getting your self in to a mess. I have an 11 and 4 month old dachshunds the older on is fully house broken and we still have a hard time with the newer puppy so please save your self the stress and problems and get your heeler trained first.

But as for training; take her out after she eats, sleeps, long walks, chews for a long time, or plays. All these activities will make her need to go. Fortunately your dog will be able to hold it longer because of her age. When ever she goes praise her and tell her what a good girl she is and immediately take her inside, that way she knows that outside is where she goes potty and then gets to come right back in and be with you. For a while you will need to take her out on a leash so that she won’t go wondering around and think it is play time. It is strictly potty time out side, unless you say other wise. When she is inside watch to see if she starts wonder away by herself or circling or squatting, all are signs that she needs to go potty. When you start to take her outside say it’s time to go potty or something like that.

If she does make a mess in the house, don’t scold her unless you catch her in the act, she won’t remember doing it.

Also if you don’t crate her, I suggest you do. Crating can be difficult for a dog who isn’t used to it but is extremely wonderful at night time and when you aren’t at home.

It might be difficult for the first few days or weeks but keep doing it and someday your dog will be house trained! Good luck!

by the way it is extremely rewarding when she will be finally house trained and you have a great dog!

Answer by steven s
well i’ve trained many dogs by using treats (dog bones) the way this works is you let them outside to do their business and when they come back in give them the treat. the dogs will start thinking every time they need to go out they will receive a treat then they will start coming to you to let them out when this happens start giving them a treat only a few times a day to wean them back but you have to stay consistent

puppy training?

Question by sugarbrown: puppy training?
I was placing my 4month puppy in a crate when i went to work 7hours would be the longest time away, and when i came home and through the night she would be out. Then i started taking her to puppy training classes and the trainer told me to purchase a play pen to keep her in while at work and to but in the crate at night. I’ve noticed that during the day she is peeing in the playpen, nights are okay in the crate. What should i do i feel we are going backwards because when she was in the crate during the day we did not having any accidents. Would it be wrong if i kept her in the crate during the day while i’m at work and bed time

Answer by libertydogtraining
7 hours is way to long for her to be left in a crate. You are actually drastically increasing the risks of her getting ill, like from a urinary tract infection or becoming impacted from not being able to use the bathroom.

I really suggest that if you want to crate her while at work you:
1. Come home during lunch to let her out and use the potty.
2. Have a friend, relative, or trusted neighbor let her out.
3. You hire a dog walker/pet sitter to give her a potty break.

Please read the following information about house training and crate training. I hope this helps!

Answer by star_gazer_9999
No, it’s not wrong to keep you r dog in a crate during the day, but you should come home for lunch or have someone let her out during the day so that she can go outside. All day and then all night for a 4 month old puppy is WAY TOO LONG! Your pup should be let out of the crate every 2 to 3 hours. But also needs play and walks, too!

i would treat the puppy like a person. every 15 minutes put it out side or walk it until it potties and give it a lot of praise. after about two weeks raise it to every 30 minutes. i realize thou with you at work that isnt always going to work. Maybe a person wouldnt mind dog sitting so that it gets trained to potty out side

Answer by WhyBother919
I would suggest crate training. I’ve done it with all of my dogs and none of them pee in the house anymore. It’s really simple. Before you leave, take him/her out to potty and then put him/her in the crate and when you come home, immediately let him/her outside to potty. Do this all day or just everytime you leave. They will eventually learn that he/she does not want to use the restroom in his/her crate where he/she is, so he’ll/she’ll hold it until you get home to let him/her out. It teaches routine and he/she will learn that he/she only goes to the restroom when you let him/her out. When he/she goes outside and uses the restroom, praise him/her and reinforce him/her with a small treat. I also try to pay attention to my dogs, if they’re by the door, I know they need to go out. One of my dogs, Lexi, will climb in my lap and whine when she needs to go.

Answer by melbeemills
This is what I did:

Put my puppy in a kennel while I’m at work. Theyare reluctant to go where they have to sleep.

Then IMMEDIATELY take him outside and walk with him to make sure he goes to the bathroom.

(And when you’re home, be sure to take them out every 30 minutes or so)

When he’d have an accident in the home, I would rub his nose in it and spank his butt a few times, then immediately take him outside.

In these stages, it’s best to pretend that they are an 18 month old child, and you have to watch them always. If you catch them in the act, this is best. They will have a clearer understanding of why you are upset with them.

If the accident is not fresh, don’t bother spanking, you will confuse them!

This worked for me. May not work for everyone, but I thought I’d at least share!

Answer by abbyful
Consistency, consistency, consistency.
And positive reinforcement. And a schedule.

Avoide the newspaper/pee-pads. They just slow down and prolong the process. You train the dog to the newspaper/pee-pad, and then you need to retrain it to go outside. It’s better to just have them go outside from the start.

Take the dog outside first thing in the morning. When you feed the puppy, take it outside about 20 minutes later. Take it out before bedtime. And when it uses the bathroom outside, give it a treat.

Also take the dog out every hour or two during the day, to give it an opportunity to relieve itself. (More often if it is a young or small puppy.)

If the dog uses the bathroom inside and you don’t catch it in the act, do nothing. (Well, clean up the mess, but do nothing to the dog.) The dog doesn’t understand why it is being punished after the fact, it has forgotten all about it’s mess on the floor by then.

If you catch the dog in the act, say “no!” or “unt-uh!”, and promptly take the dog outside. When it finishes using the bathroom outside, give it a treat.

You need to watch the dog constantly. Tie the leash to your belt-loop if you need to, so the dog is always by you. If you cannot be watching the dog for some reason, but it in it’s crate. A dog typically won’t soil it’s sleeping area. (Crate training is a wonderful tool when housebreaking a dog.)

While you’re at work, the puppy should be in its crate. As soon as you get home on your lunch break and after work, first thing is take the puppy outside to do it’s business.

never scold or punish your dog if he does ‘it’ in the wrong place. lay a piece of newspaper in one part of the house, whenever u see him positioning himself to start doing his job quickly drag him and see that he does it on the paper. gradually he will learn to do it there whenever he does not do his job there point at it and say NO clearly and then take him to the newspaper and point at it. once he learns to do his job on the paper move it into the bathroom and then put the paper in a garden outside your house and then whenever you see him going towards the paper take him out for a walk and do not take him back home until he does what he had to. slowly he will learn that he should do everything on the paper and go to the door when he needs to go out……

Answer by jesjesmaxie
well during the day put puppy training pads in your house. it is a pad with a scent that makes them have to go potty. then when you are home at lunch let your puppy out for 15 minutes and put out the puppy pad so she/he can get all the pee out, then let she/he in and limit the water in the bowl. give him/her a treat if she/he goes potty. do NOT crate train. a crate is not a punishment it is a place where dogs can go to relax. we crate trained my second dog in the washing room and know she will not even go in there.

Answer by undertowrottie
If you are not home all day I don’t understand why you would of gotten a puppy and not go to a shelter and buy a dog that is already train. But now that you have a puppy maybe consider building an outside run with a shelter than there is no chains and it is outside and not locked up to do business in your house or being locked up in a crate. Enjoy your puppy and good luck.

how can I train my puppy not to bark so much?

Question by kamakazee: how can I train my puppy not to bark so much?
My puppy is 5 months old and constantly barks. There are noise laws where I live that say a dog can not bark for more than 10 minutes within a half hour time span. What can I do to train him not to bark so much?
he’s a jack russel
he gets lots of exercise running around outside. we have huge backyard and we’re right on the river so he swims quite alot as well.

He’s a dog — dogs bark.

He’s barking for a reason — figure out what it is and eliminate it (barking at the neighbors = bring him inside; barking at the cat = put the dog in a different room)

Personally, I would move.

Answer by lighthouse_guard86
my puppy actually has this barking issue too but where i live doesnt have any laws against that . try treating him when hes not barking or praise him when hes quite ,even tho im not sure it would work lol

good luck

Answer by Angel
You should call the dog whisperer he can work miracles!

Answer by hj_thorne
He sounds frustrated and probably needs more exercise to tire him out. Tired dogs don’t bark.

What you can do is get some nice bite size pieces of plain boiled chicken. When he barks say quiet and use the hand motion (similar to safe done by an umpire) when he stops reward with a chicken piece. When he barks again repeat. Eventually you’ll be able to just use the word quiet and he’ll stop.

However, you need to give him more exercise to tire him and entertain him to keep his mind active.

If you don’t know anything about Jack Russells I suggest you do some research. They are very hyper and require a lot of activity to keep them busy.

Good luck

Answer by jessiedallas1982
i would take him to a puppy course, you want to train him to listen to you, but not to not bark all together

Answer by Leeza911
I have a corgi/ jack russel and I have used hand signals and sound to teach him not to bark. It is a matter of doing the same things EVERY time he is barking.

Answer by godsfire44
I Agree, dog will bark, it is their nature. But if you absolutely must train the puppy not to bark you can go to jbpet.com. They have what is called a good neighbor bark breaker, it costs about 40 dollars or so. It will not hurt the puppy, it just makes an unpleasant sound that is at a frequency only dogs can hear. They also have spray collars, basically if the dog barks, the collar will automatically spray water aimed at their face. Good luck.

Where should i start puppy training? Do i teach her to sit first or what??? My pupp is almost 9 weeks old can i start training her??

YES! Start right away! I have 3 week old pit bulls & as soon as they come home..well around 9 or 10 weeks we will begin. Look in your phone book for trainers & talk to a few different ones to see who you click with the best. I have found in California that they run around $ 100 for a six week class..not bad, huh?

Answer by jeniffer_cvs
Since your puppy is really young you can train her as long as it is in short sessions. You can do 2 or 3 sessions a day no longer than 15 mins.
Otherwise the training might not be sucessful and she is a puppy she wants to play just like any youngster

A very easy way to teach her to sit is to have a treat in your hand and make a fit over her head, give the command “sit”. when she does congratulate her, pet her and give her the treat. You will only need the treat the first time , the following times just pet her otherwise you can either overfeed her, or she wont do anything unless there is a treat involved.

You can do the training in a quiet, non distracting place so you have your puppies full attention.

Dont forget to pet her and encourage her when she does something good. Just like people puppies like recognition!

good luck with your new puppy :0)
In sources I’ve added you some resourceful links on training

Answer by singerr:]
first you should teach her where to use the restroom, buy special pads at petco that once she pees on it it keep the smell and she will continue peeing on it, once she realizes that thats the spot give her a treat and take it outside ( this will take weeks)
then maybe you could teach her to sit which you should just say “sit” push her bottom down softly untill she touches the floor with it and give her a treat
then “stay” which after she has learned “sit” just put your hand out as if saying stop and walk away while saying stay, if she moves then go back make her sit and repeat
goodluck!
make sure you reward her well

Answer by Yuki Ookami
Start by going by a schedule and get the dog used to doing things going by time. As for tricks play with the with toys and treats and do the tricks with Him/Her. Like roll over with Him/er or sit and ext.

A dog gets immense satisfaction when it is praised by it’s owner for obedience and ends up feeling guilty for any disobedient behavior. Every dog owner has his own method of training his dog. Some dog owners achieve good results in a short while and without much hard work. Even expert trainers cannot achieve success with all kinds of dogs as methods of training differ from one breed to another.

if they poop in the house tell them no and hit there but wit a newspaper.duh duh duh duh duh

Answer by MitchHellman
Geez, that’s a tough one. I’ve never seen a dog use a potty before!

Answer by imalisap
Don’t listen to DUH DUH DUH The only time it is exceptable to hit the dog is if you catch them in the act, even then DON’T do the rub the nose in it and spanking. Firmly tell the dog no and take him outside where you want him to go. The best way to house break is to take the dogs outside about every 30 to 1 hour, when they go make a big deal about it and tell them how good they were. Dont’t start rewarding them right away with treats, they will think that by going outside they get cookies…that will come later. Just always try to remember like with children possitive re-enforcement is the best.

Answer by golddigger
First and foremost never, never, never, hit your puppies. Only repremand the pups for going in the house if you catch them in the act. A firm “No, you potty outside,” and them take them outside. Take them out every 1-2 hours at first, increasing the time between visits outside as they grow, and shortly after eating. Don’t give them the chance to go in the house by keeping them in a crate when you are not at home. Look for cues that they need to go outside, like sniffing intently at the floor. Whenever they do go outside, give tons of praise let them know they are doing what you want, they want to please you and make you happy!
Also I have found it to be helpful to reward with a treat, when they do go potty outside so they know they are going outside to potty not to play.
And never rub thier nose in any messes they make, this can make them very ill or make them think that they are supposed to eat thier feces or urine

Puppy Training?

Question by : Puppy Training?
My 4 month old puppy is really smart and has been picking up every trick I can think of….(sit, lay down, roll over, speak, dance, up, shake, come, sit and stay, heal…) I’m out of ideas as to what to train her to do….should I take her to a more advanced training class since she is picking up all these other tricks really fast?
She has been totally into the training…but we only practice about twice a day and the rest of the time she is a puppy and LOVES to play with me and my family….She is just so amazing that she is learning these things so fast!

Best Answers:

Answer by heather l
she sounds very smart. you should let her go to all the classes you can afford as long as she is interested. we have a neighbor who took her dog to those classes where she learned to do things like help carry groceries, get things from the fridge, open doors, turn on lights.etc.. so cool and she goes to nursing homes to bring light into otherwise dark days for some.

Answer by watercurves
Try a rally-o class or an agility class to change it up and encourage attention focusing and teamwork. Good luck!

Answer by lisa
I wouldn’t rush her/him even though she is understanding very well. Let her relax and be a puppy for a while. They will love you for that and you won’t regret it.

Answer by piggletsmom
Advanced obedience classes are always a good idea but, depending on the dog, obstacle and field training could be fun too.

Answer by junior4
Your dog sounds pretty smart, my puppy was a quick learner to and wen i ran out of tricks to teach him i started making little obstacle courses for him. you can use things around the house just use your imagination. make things to jump on, go under, walk along, go around etc. it can be fun for both of you. do it out side where you have more room.
The good thing about this is that you can keep changing it around so the training is endless. Have fun
